It all started with a simple swipe of a finger on Hinge. Our first date was a game of pickleball, though Bert, thinking it was the same as ping pong, was a little confused. But it didn’t matter. What mattered was spending time with Katya, and everything else was just a bonus.

We soon realized we shared a mutual love for exploring new places, eating desserts and taking long walks along the beach, which became our perfect way to unwind together. Then came an impromptu trip to Charleston, where we really fell deeper in love. It might have been the charm of the city, amazing food, or the romantic backdrop, but as we walked down the cobblestone streets, we both felt like we were living out our own version of The Notebook—minus the rainstorm and dramatic speeches.

From that point on, we were inseparable. Bert later proposed in the living room of his apartment with some ice, and just the next day, he tested positive for COVID. Talk about in sickness and in health starting early, right?
